I spend alot of my time amazed and confused over the way bureaucracies operate and today is no different. My stupid question of the day: How is it a that a new high school is allowed to pick the same colors and mascot as a school in the same conference that has been around for thirty years?

United Wins Fifth in a Row

DC United guts out another road game to beat Toronto FC 1-0. For once I don't get to write "we need to finish our chances!". Fred scored the game winner in the eigth minute, on DC United's first shot. United's second shot wouldn't come until the sixty-second minute. Toronto FC out shot the Black and Red 12-5. Toronto's attack was very predictable with all of their injury problems and DC United's defense kept their shape. Here's what Vanney had to say:

"It's tough because you know, obviously Dichio -- he's a house, he's tough to move, and you know he's going to win it. But the game it's predictable -- what they do is predictable, and we did a great job of picking up second balls, tracking runners, getting balls that are knocked down. We knew that if we could do that we could eliminate a good portion of their attack."

NC State ties #1 UCLA

Hopefully in the last game to be held at Method Road, NC State Men's soccer team tied the Nation's #1 team, 2 - 2. To battle the heat the game was played in three thirty minute periods. State missed a PK early and the Bruins missed a break away late that could have broken the tie. Here's the official report.

Okay it wasn't a shut out, but we beat New York. We've got another cup for the trophy case. Of course the big news was Jaime finally getting 109. The flip side of that was he got it from the 'mark'. Much has been made of the fact that Jaime hasn't had a goal in the run of play this year and some are doubting his usefullness. But take a look at what DC United's Technical Director, Dave Kasper has to say:

"Hopefully we won't have to think about that for a long time," said Kasper with a grin, "but when that day comes, whether it's four years, five years, six years, we hope he's part of the organization."


That is why DC United is the class of Major League Soccer.

The bigger news for the rumor mongrels seems to be the fact that Boswell is sitting the bench. All kind of conspiracy theories are being floated, like he's been benched because of his comments about ESPN's soccer coverage or he's indicated he's heading to Europe and DC doesn't want to invest more time in him. Personally I think it's simple math, the organization is stuck with $115K of Vanney's salary this year and we're paying Boz $45,000. Who would you sit? Let's be honest Bobby isn't having a stellar year, a little motivation will do him wonders. Depth and competition within the squad produces champions and I'm ready to see us playing for the Cup at home this year!

This game will determine the winner of the Atlantic Cup. A win or draw and the cup stays in DC. More importantly, this game is all about taking three points against a Conference rival. Ben Olsen said,
"It's about us being tied in a tight Eastern Conference and everybody needs points to make the playoffs. I like the new playoff system -- I think the fight to get in the playoffs now is harder, and these games get more meaningful as we wind down the year a little bit."

Josh gros will not be able to play, actually his season may be over with more concussion problems. It will be interesting to see if Moose gets the nod. If he does he will have his hands full with Dane Richards speed. Richards absolutely owned the wing in the LA game, hopefully we'll be able to slo him down. Ben Olsen has been training and will be ready to go.

It will be interesting to see what Soehn will do tonight in central defense. When Steven Goff asked him about his options he replied:

"From a coaching standpoint, it's a great thing to have. Everybody is better when you have someone looking over your shoulder. It pushes each other to stay sharp."

I think the keys to the game will be closing down Mathis or Reyna in the midfield, not allowing Juan Pablo to drift, and closing down Richards. Without good service I believe Altidore becomes a non factor. Obviously on the other side of the coin we have to finish. Waterreus is the weak link for New York so hopefully we'll actually shoot tonight instead of trying to dribble the ball into the net.

As much as I hate to, I have to give Donovan his due. All the hype about Beckham flying to England for the Germany game and flying back to face Chivas hasn't mentioned Donovan will be doing the same. I find that interesting given the fact that Donovan will go a full 90 and Beckham won't. According to ussoccer.com Donovan looks to take over the record books:

I'm sorry I just can't get this image out of my head. Don Garber played by Joaquin Phoenix and Ante Jazic played by Russell Crowe. Garber walking through the tunnel, pregame, and cutting the hamstring of every defender.

Back to reality MLS hit a homerun in New Jersey. Over 66,000 in the stands to see an extremely exciting match. The good news, it wasn't the David Beckham show, Altidore, Angel, Donovan and Pavon all showed their class.

The big surprise for me was the stadium booing when Beckham took his first free kick. The flashbulbs were going off but the crowd was still cheering the home team. Where have they been for ten years?

HIGHLIGHTS:

After an ugly first half (seven shots between the two teams) DC United took control of the game."We came out [of the locker room] a totally different team than the first half and we actually went at them a little bit," said Perkins.In league play, United has now won three games in a row, all by shutout.

"I always say that defending starts with your forwards. And when they do a good job of making them play predictable, it is easy for everyone else behind," Soehn said. "I think that our performance defensively as a unit has been much better. Anytime you're throwing shutouts, that is important."

Boswell was on the bench, Olsen is having bone spur problems, and Gros had to come out with more concussion issues.

Each club has had an anthem made for them by a 'local' band and you can download the music at the website, as well as create your own video using Jumpcut. DC United's anthem was written and performed by "Bad Brains", which apparently, according to almost all accounts, is "FREAKIN' UNBELIEVABLE!".What ever I've got to go trim my ear hair.

Roy Keane blasts players as weak.

Pachuca-Dynamo Highlights

It took 120 minutes and PKs for Pachuca to knock Houston out of the SuperLiga competition. Houston was down to nine men while Pachuca played with ten as the game was decided by penalties. This was another fabulous game in what hopefully becomes a classic competition.

Bob Bradley, please call Jozy up for Brasil (Altidore highlights)

I don't care how old he is, this kid plays like a man. We are desperate for a striker on the USMNT and if his second goal this weekend didn't say "Coach, I'm ready", I don't know what it will take.
Beside his great skill the kid seems to be a class act. Every interview I've seen with him, he always says the right things.
What I remember about Adu at this age was getting caught drinking and pouting about having to learn to play defense and wing. Adu's interview after leaving for Benfica said basically "I'm a middle of the park player and nobody in the U.S. was smart enough to let me play there."
On the other hand Altidore was forced to play wing a couple of weeks ago and when Allen Hopkins interviewed him his response was, " As a freshman I need to learn all of the positions.".

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The latest 'news' is the cancellation of the USMNT upcoming match versus Mexico to be held at Azteca Stadium. The word is that this will be replaced by the USMNT playing Brasil in Chicago at Soldiers Field on September 9.
Hopefully this news will allow some National Team fans to cut back on their medication that was prescribed when Bradley's Copa America roster was published.
Amazing how things work out some time. Now we'll be able to see the U.S. play the Copa America Champions with a rested 'A' team.

Also let me go on record early that I want to see Altidore called up for this one!


THE BAD

Arguably the best team in the League, Houston Dynamo, drop two games this week. First losing to Real Salt Lake then to the Colorado Rapids.

"It's embarrassing losing to the two worst teams in the league," said striker Brian Ching."

THE UGLY

Damarcus beasley faced racist taunts during his first Champions League game with the Rangers. Fans of FK Zeta were were making monkey sounds targeted at Beasley and team-mate Jean-Claude Darcheville. Beasley said:
"That's not normal, not just for us, black players, that's not normal for all other normal people."
The American speedster responded in the best way possible by putting the game winner in the back of the net.
FIFA will investigate the incident.

According to Steve Goff at Soccer Insider the September ninth match between the USA and Mexico at Azteca has been cancelled and the USA will be playing Brasil on that date at Soldiers Field.

Sweatin' Like a Poodle at Vick's Place

Hibriten's Alumni Game was a success yesterday. There were over twenty years of Hibriten graduates on hand (enduring heat and cardio activity) to salute the Panther's soccer tradition.



Former coach John Howarth was on hand to referee. The first game saw alumni versus alumni with five JV players on the field to fill out the sides. This was obviously a ploy to wear the old men out before they went on to play the Varsity side.



The Varsity eeked out a 1-0 victory and then played the JV for the last game of the evening.



There was a lot of good fellowship, good food and good soccer. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves despite the heat.



Next year plans are to organize and expand to an Alumni weekend.

DCU 1 LA GALAXY 0 HIGHLIGHTS

A lot of good news from last night's game. Emilio takes sole possession of League scoring leader, Fred looked good playing in the middle (actual position), creative playmaking and plenty of chances. Jaime Moreno looked dangerous. The back line is starting to gel, hopefully Soehn won't try to stick Vanney out there.
The bad news; didn't finish LA off. The game could have been 4-0 but just as easily 1-2. LA will be much more difficult Wednesday in SuperLiga action.

Beckham debut watch over

The circus came to town last night to a sold out RFK Stadium.

"Yeah, but it's great," said Ben Olsen, when asked about the commotion generated by the former England captain's presence. "If that's a circus, I'd like to play in a circus every week. With that many fans cheering -- I was on the bench looking around, and it was just such a nice venue atmosphere. That whole side over there, all cheering -- one great, great night."

Then in the 72nd minute despite a heavy downpour and Kyle Martino being sent off David Beckham made his MLS debut.

"Honestly, I told myself if he comes in, I'm going to give him five seconds, look at him, and then go on with the game," admitted Devon McTavish with a smile. "He came in, I looked over at him, I looked at all the flash bulbs going off, and said 'this is pretty cool.' And then I got back to it. But you've got to take a moment like that in."

He immediately began directing his LA Galaxy teammates, and even a man down LA looked like an entirely different team with him on the field.

"We have to look forward to the next game and work hard because it's a process that we have to get right," Beckham said. "And we will because we've got a lot of talent in this team. It's just about getting it onto the pitch and proving it."

After the game Ben Olsen got the #23 jersey. Steve Goff at the Post had this exchange on his blog:

Ben Olsen was the lucky dude with Beckham's jersey afterward, adding to his collection that includes Raul's and Gattuso's.

What will happen to it?

"My wife will probably steal it and wear it."

Big, big game tonight. Three points could give DC United sole possession of second place in the East. The problem is the fact that LA seems to have United's number at RFK. I'm sure the Galaxy players are going to want to redeem their showing in Sunday's match against Toronto. The major problem will be the weather. As we saw in Toronto if you pressure LA's midfield they will turn the ball over. Let's hope Emilio hasn't put his mojo down since the New England game.Gomez will be a game time decision but it is not looking good.

Steve McClaren will be at the game to evaluate MLS' level of play first hand.

With a goal Jaime Moreno could finally take sole possession of MLS' scoring record.

We'll get to see which Abel Xavier shows up, he looked pretty good against Toronto, so hopefully we get the revolving door tonight.

If Beckham comes on we'll get to see how long it takes Ritchie Williams to channel himself through Ben Olsen (it could be ugly).

It's not the heat, it's the dew point!!

According to the Washington Post:

"The August heat not only slowed down pedestrians trudging along baking downtown sidewalks, but also Metro trains below. Because excessive heat can bend steel rails, trains were being held to speeds of less than 45 miles per hour this afternoon, rather than a usual speed of 59 miles per hour. Metro trains also were being operated manually rather than automatically."

So if it is unsafe for the Metro to run at full speed, what's that mean for your midfield? Wow, McClaren is going to get a representative League match tomorrow.

McBride Gets Armband

Brian McBride, always lauded as the consummate professional has been named captain of Fulham Football Club. The fact that McBride is 35 years old, playing for a new coach and hit a slump towards the end of last season, serves to underscore the respect his new coach and obviously his teammates have for him. His courage on the field has always been painfully (and I do mean painfully) obvious. But his work ethic and values off the field have always impressed me more.

"Put your head down and work as hard as you can because there is always someone better out there."

"Basically I say a few prayers before a game and let that direct me, not superstitions."

"It's not any one person. It's not any one coach. It's the team."

ASU will warm up for the season with a pair of exhibition matches at Campbell (Aug. 20) and against Atlantic-Sun Champion Gardner-Webb (Aug. 25) before beginning the regular season with the Broyhill Inn & Conference Center Appalachian Classic on August 31 and September 2.

FC Dallas will face Seattle, Railhawks advance in U.S. Open Cup

Seattle Sounders destroyed the Colorado Rapids, 5-0, to advance to the semifinals in the U.S. Open Cup. FC Dallas will face the Sounders September 4, in Seattle. The Railhawks advanced to the semifinals, defeating the Richmond Kickers 1-0. The Railhawks will travel to New England if they defeat the Islanders tonight. If Harrisburg wins the Sept 4th semifinal will be at home in Cary. Keep up with all the Railhawk action here.

FC Dallas needs OT to advance in Open Cup

The Charleston Battery opened up the scoring with a goal by Stephen Armstrong in the seventeenth minute. Clarence Goodson evened the score with a header five minutes later.
Arturo Alvarez stopped a repeat of last year's penalty kicks by scoring the winning goal in overtime. FC Dallas will wait for the results of the Seattle Sounder-Colorado Rapids game to see who they will meet in the semis.

The Changing Face of Youth Soccer

US Soccer has completed choosing the clubs that will participate in the first year of the newly created Development Academy. “The Development Academy has been implemented to shift the focus of the young elite player toward a ‘meaningful training and competition’ model, with the U.S. Soccer Federation taking the initiative to extend its National Team program into the daily environment of the elite player,” said U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati. “The response thus far has been unprecedented for a youth initiative.” There are sixty four clubs that will compete against each other in an eight month season. The group of sixty four was selected from over one hundred and fifty clubs, That applied in less than two months. The competition component of the Academy will feature 63 clubs, representing 24 states and the District of Columbia, plus the U.S. National Team from U.S. Soccer’s Residency Program, playing at the Under-15/16 and Under-17/18 age levels.

Player Development Academy Information

The Development Academy kicks off in September with a two-day orientation in Chicago. The first matches of the inaugural season will then begin during the first week of October. Teams will compete in three different types of game weekends – individual conference games, travel partner weekends and showcase weekends to provide them with the optimum balance of playing rhythm, economy of travel and exposure to scouts.

In addition to improving the daily environment for players, the Academy will also provide a better development platform for coaches and referees. Each club will receive two invitations to attend the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Best Practices seminars, providing coaches with the opportunity to keep updated on the latest styles and methods of coaching being used at the national level. U.S. Soccer will assign referees to the Academy matches, providing them with more opportunities to develop.

The Brasilians do everything with flair, even own goals.

EMILIO FINDS HIS MOJO - DC 3 - Revs 0

Emilio scores in the 31' and the 76' adding to Josh Gros' opening toe poke in the 22' for a dominating win over the New England Revolution yesterday. With Gomez and Moreno on the bench United looked solid and maintained possession through out the game. Having Namoff return to the back line seemed to be key to solving our defensive woes. I think DCenters said it best about how they looked:

"The team that never gives up, the team that possesses and passes beautifully, the team that kills off opponents instead of games, the team we fans expect when we see the shirt. In short they played like they were DC United against a team that has never known what winning a championship is like."

For those screaming for Emilio to be benched, it should be noted that he is tied with Eddie Johnson for most goals in the league (12) and three goals ahead Juan Pablo Angel.

The next game will be MLS Primetime Thursday on ESPN2 at 7:00pm, as DC hosts LA Galaxy.

We then play LA, away in SuperLiga semifinals, Wednesday, Aug 15th At 10:00pm.

ESPN2 Primetime Thursday makes a special engagement this week when the network broadcasts LA Galaxy at Toronto FC live on Sunday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Beckham is looking doubtful to play. It should be interesting to see how the Toronto fans greet him. Here's some video on their welcome for Chicago's new 'Designated Player', Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

Revolution 2 - Kansas City 0

Entertaining soccer tonight. Revolution get the three points to extend their lead nine points ahead of fifth placed DC United. Halftime saw the game scoreless with even possession and New England out shooting the Wizards nine to eight. Noonan finally finished one in the 55' and Cristman put the icing on the cake in stoppage time. There were alot of players with North Carolina connections on the field.
